Jungledisk

ShareThisLast night I was reading Groklaw's news feed and I came upon a particularly interesting article Cloud Computing Tips for the Enterprise. In the article was a link to Amazon S3 and Jungledisk. I've been reading about Amazon's Simple Storage but until last night had not used it. Now I'm using Jungledisk on Linux and Windows to connect to my own simple storage on Amazon. With Jungledisk you can store an unlimited amount of data for only fifteen cents a gigabyte.

Red Hat Enterprise 5

ShareThisLast night I purchased Red Hat Enterprise 5. It's been a couple of years since I did the same with Red Hat Enterprise 4, but we want to upgrade our Lotus Domino server at Franklinville Central School to Domino 8 and in order for that to happen we must have Red Hat Enterprise 5 running. Educational institutions can purchase an unsupported edition of Red Hat Enterprise 5 for $60.   That's a great value. Add to that you get all the Xen virtualization software too.

Epals

ShareThisAt the same I learned about another very interesting free site that is open to educators and interestingly enought it runs on Drupal. It's called Epals School Blog and you can set up a free account for you and your classroom. Here is a link to the site that we were using yesterday and it is representative of the kind of site you can set up for your students.

Pay Attention

ShareThisYesterday I attended a 21st Century Educational Leadership conference at the Western New York Regional Information Center. I learned many new things and was exposed to some new technology applications. The conference began with this video which I think speaks volumes about where we are as a society and culture. Going Green

ShareThisWith the price of fuel sky-rocketing world wide there is a sudden up tick in people concerned about energy footprint and how to reduce it. I've seen some articles written about Linux and green PCs.
LessWatts is about creating a community around saving power on Linux, bringing developers, users, and sysadmins together to share software, optimizations, and tips and tricks.
I've given some thought to my own energy footprint and to the workplace.
